Eights and Nines:

2017 Choice Classes

Block A: 9:30-10:30

Live Action RPG (Woobens Celony) Have you ever wanted to be the hero of a fantasy tale but never had the chance? Well now you do! By taking on another perspective and living in a story, we will choose a universe to play in and assume a new identity. Learn the basics of roleplaying games as we take the game into the real world, by creating a character, getting gear, and having adventures!

A Minute to Win it (Norah Turnham Roderick) Every day we’ll split up into teams – sometimes as individuals, partners, or larger groups – to challenge each other to complete a wacky task within a minute! Counselors will provide some challenges but you’ll have a chance to create your own challenges too. Examples might include: Cookie Face, Paper Clip Races, Penny Stacker, Bounce Off, and more!

Portals, Vessels, & Nets (Mollie Flannery) Using chicken wire, twigs, embroidery hoops, and other self-selected materials, campers will create large-scale sculptures that function as portals, vessels, and nets. One camper may create a 4-foot tall bird’s nest while another may construct a giant sculpture inspired by a crystal vase. After building these larger than life containers, campers will design and create things to go inside of them, suspending these sculptures inside of their large creations. Campers will practice concept development, sculpting with wire, and teamwork.

Karate (Vinnie Barille) An introduction to the basic moves and ideas of karate. Activities will focus on building strength, flexibility, coordination, and spatial awareness.

Quidditch (James Miner) Welcome to the fantastical game of Quidditch, founded by The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Players will be organized into houses (or teams), and work together to set up the playing field and positions. All players will get the opportunity to be Chasers, Bludgers, Seekers, and the ever elusive Snitch! The beginning of class will cover the rules of Quidditch and give players time to warm up and hone their skills. Bring your teamwork, strategy, sportsmanship, and imagination!

Ultimate Frisbee (Jake Tiner) Campers will first learn the basics of throwing and catching a frisbee. Then, campers will use those skills to play in the ultimate game: Ultimate Frisbee! Campers will get active, learn the benefits of teamwork, and most of all have fun!

Block B: 1:30-2:30

Fabric Painting (Naomi Clark) In this fun art class, campers will learn how to paint and print on different kinds of fabric, creating a range of textures and patterns. We will also learn how to silk paint and how to steam set our compositions to take home and enjoy.

They Might Be Giants (Mollie Flannery) From a giant caterpillar tunnel to a four-foot beehive, the sculptural possibilities in this class are endless! Each camper will think of a creature or natural object and blow it up to a giant scale. We will construct using cardboard, chicken wire, aluminum foil, and more. Campers will work independently and in groups on their projects, developing skills in collaboration and design. At the end of this session, campers will parade their giant sculptures for other campers to see and experience.

Basketball (Woobens Celony) Join us in the gym, where we will practice our dribbling and passing, shooting and rebounding skills in a supportive environment.  Through team play, campers will work on developing on-the-court communication, strategy and good sportsmanship. We will always finish class with fun group basketball games like horse, knockout and others…get in the game!

Block C: 2:30-3:30

RPG 101 (Jake Tiner) Learn the fun of taking on another perspective and living in a story. Campers will get to create characters, assign attributes  and develop a backstory. Then they will go on a fantastic adventure full of interesting characters, awesome obstacles and formidable enemies.

Capture the Flag (Woobens Celony) Come play capture the flag, as well as other team games! We will start with the original game, and then come up with our own variations of the classic game using our creativity and team work.

Bead It! (Naomi Clark) Come make beads out of clay, wood, paper, recycled materials and whatever else we can find. We will use our hand-crafted beads to then make jewelry, wearable works of art, mosaics and more!

Little Red Unplugged (Tara McLaughlin) In this class, campers/songwriters will listen to a variety of songs from various cultures, time periods, genres and styles. We will learn about basic song writing and different techniques. Working with partners, we will create melodies and words that can be put together into a beautiful piece of music! Everyone will have their own special song-writing notebook to create their masterpieces. Campers will explore expression through music and have the opportunity to complete and perform one full song at the end of the session for a Little Red Unplugged Rooftop Show!
